Hi Mark. I have just seen your message (I only check the OG site occasionally). I think you are also a Luanshya boy.
Do you get to the Cape Town OG get togethers? I think there are many OGs from our era now there.

Well well well. I was telling my grandson what school I went to and how it was as a boarder back in 1969 at Hartman House and Mr Kepler,Mr Parkinson, Mr Bailey etc and then on to Saints 1970-1975 I can still recite the prefects of 1970: Hacking(Headboy), Elliot, Cripwell,Land,Ford,Ward,Howard,Fynn,Fyfe,Healey,Buckland,Rowan,Jones,Stone(Form one prefect)and Spence. Can any body else do that?My class mates were Rick(the Brick)Braham(Deseased):Oliver(Olly)Burton:Connal Walsh:Remo Gardini:Robby Rikards:Brian Murphy:Andrew Mckay:Chila Ryan:Pat Partridge:Paul Babolakis:James Mashore:Reg Mutanyani and many others I cannot recall full names.Well its been a remarkable walk back in time for me and a wonderful opportunity to reminisce and share these memories with my next generation. I am married to Mercia and have had 5 children 4 girls and a son who went to SACS College here in C/Town.7 grand children and a small trucking Co.Born in '57 I am 51 this year!Saints has played a large role in moulding the man in me and I am proud to be an OG.I still have my school tie.God bless us all.

It's with the deepest regret that i announce the death of Daniel White who left saints in 2003. He was one of the most chilled guys you would ever have had the privilege to know. If you knew him and want further details, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Craig (Mac) Maclean <wjcmac (at) hotmail.com>

Gentlemen
It is with great sadness that I report the death of Kevin White last week.
Kevin left Saints in about 1939 to serve in the RAF through the Second World War, mainly in North Africa.
He was always very proad of his RAF days and, more especially, his Saints days.
I think he was in the first saints rugby team that Fr Weaver SJ trained (the school had played football until then) and which went on to win what I think was called the Town Cup (against PE I think).
I was lucky enough to take him to his first ever OG Dinner at Saints when I was last in Zim on holidays, in 1989, and it was tremendous to see the warm and special welcome he got from other OGs, young, old and in between, and also Fr Ross, who is the same age.
I once asked him what was the most important thing in his life. He said he needed to think about that and, after a few hours, came back and told me it was to get his children (six of) into Heaven.
He will be missed by Barbara (Bulawayo Convent girl), his six children, family and friends - he was certainly a man for others.
His funeral service will be at St Thomas Moore Church, Bournemouth, UK on wednesday 24 May 2005 at 2.30pm.
Masakati

From an early entry in Comments I think you can e-mail corrections to Guy, who was the main man behind getting this web site up and running.
I think Guy's e mail is admin@saints.on.web.za

Whilst on I was very upset to see in the news that Peter Pucill-Gilpin has had his farm invaded and taken over (just as he crops are ready). He was at Saints in my year, a good guy from a good family. My thoughts and prayers are with all the OGs and good people in Zim who are struggling to do the right thing there, with the evil and madness that is taking place.

Inherent in man is the potential to be competent. All who achieved had a vision in sight and ran like a madd man towards it.They turned stumbling blocks into stepping stones to greater heights.Fear God and search for the truth.Food for thought. If out of a 100 people 99 take the wrong path, does it make it the right path.If there is an absolute truth its got to be uniquely defined.

Criteria for selecting the schools
The research leading up to the publication of the 100 Best High Schools in Africa began with the launching of the website in December 2000.

Chief of all questions in the research process was this: which schools impart real knowledge and ability in their students, skills that translate directly into later success?

Why is it that students who pass with high grades do not always achieve spectacularly in the professional fields?

The main criteria used by Africa Almanac were, in order of importance:

1) The strength and active reach of the old boys and old girls associations and networks of the schools, especially as they act through re-unions, financial donations to the school, and alumni websites and newsletters. The rationale for this was that there is no better way a school's impact on students is better felt than in the degree of loyalty maintained after the students leave the school.

2) The profile of the school, especially in terms of academic excellence and/ or its success in extracurricular activity, particularly sports and the performing arts. This would be obvious for a school to be regarded as successful, especially where it performs well both in academic and extracurricular disciplines.

3) The presence and visibility of the school on the Internet, in such areas as the maintenance of a website or some form of user group and chat room. Good schools of the 21st century would, as a matter of course, have made some strides toward acquiring some form of Internet presence.

4) The presence of the school in the news and its tendency to attract news coverage on radio, television, magazine articles, and newspaper news stories and features.

5) The reputation, achievements, and high profile of the school's current and past students. The rationale would be that the crowning achievement of a school --- its very reason for being --- is to produce students and alumni who impact society in a meaningful way.

Craig (Mac) Maclean <wjcmac (at) hotmail.com>

Just realised it has been just over 30 years since I left Saints and came to the UK to do my degree, get qualified and get back to Africa.
I did get back - to Bulawayo - for a couple of years but then came back to the UK.
I keep in touch with several OGs and keep a concerned interest in Saints and Zim generally, incredible what the school and people there are doing in extraordinarily negative cicrumstances.
My thoughts often go back to how special and lucky our time was at Saints:
- Coke and Ice at the Tuck Shop;
- The fear of being pulled up for questioning - and usually there was no problem
- Big matche days against other schools
- Being in the back of the big 3 ton truck going to a rugby match
- Cross country in the botanical gardens
- Exeat weekend - going to Inyanga to the J's cottage (sometimes - for us Zambians)
- Racing past State House to get bcak in time for tea (when you couldn't afford a taxi), and sometimes seeing Smith and his wife out walking their dog (not what happens now I am sure)
- Looking forward to the privalege of smoking as a senior (didn't take it up in the end)
- Heavy bridge and snooker playing sessions in the common rooms (and sometimes footie with wood flooring blocks - like ice hockey)
- The speed with which you could get the first serving dish to those on your table to get it up for seconds in the refectory
- The fright you got from bumping into Pixie at night when you were going to the toilet and he was 'patrolling' the dorms
- Taking night swims when there were water shortages - fantastic at night when in hot weather - torture early morning in winter
- Last n ight(s) of term after the main school closed waiting on the Zambian bus and sleeping with loads of (very thin) matresses on your bed

Good and special days.

God bless the school and what it is trying to achieve.

BUT I am a bit worried about the standard of English in the last few years!

Oh well.

Cheers and good luck to the school and OGs

I just wish blerrie mgabe would keep his nose out of the affairs at Saints...Ian Smith never put his nose into Saints business, and I was there during his days as the PM.If there is anyone of you younger Old Geogians who perhaps is one of mgabe's connections, pse tell him to keep his nose out of our beloved old school. He must go and look at the affairs at blerrie Kutama, or wherever it is he went to school.

Francis Michael (Maveric) Mutingwende <francis_mutingwende (at) hotmail.com>

OG's in SOUTH AFRICA: REUNION DINNER, JOHANNESBURG

Greetings for 2004 - we hope it brings to you all the success you're looking for.

Now, right into it, the success we're looking for is a great Dinner on the 23rd April 2004...

The last E-mail shot had the resounding response of two unknown addresses, one apology and one acceptance from Rob Berry, despite the fact that he has to be back in Cape Town the next morning at 10:00 to "give away" his niece!

But hey, compared to the last event in 2002, enjoyed immensely by the 90 odd who were there, we're one better at this stage!! It has been a while though since we last included partners, so early commitment would be appreciated to ease the stress on the organisers. Please respond to this mail immediately in one of the following ways:-
Attendance
I will be there and want to book a table of 12. (at R1 800.00 per table.)
I will be there with my partner. (at R320.00 per couple). Please put me on a table of my vintage (DoB 1916, or as recently as 1985!).
I will be there on my own. (at R170 per person)
Sorry, cannot make it, but keep in touch. (No charge)
Go away and stop bothering me! (R50 ;-)
Payment. (in order of preference)
Will pay by internet.
Will deposit to the bank account.
Will pay cash on the night
I have noticed the following missing from your mailing list (Name, E-mail, Tel no, vintage). Or, just forward this mail to them and copy me.
Looking forward to your response, even if it is as brief as "1.1 (x 2) : 2.1" the most favoured, or worse case "1.3 : 2.3"

For your info...

Details for internet payment (use your surname and initials as a reference)...
Bank Name: Standard Bank
Branch Name: Sandton
Branch number ( IBT ): 9205
Beneficiary account number: 428087426

Details for payment at a bank...
Standard Bank, Sandton
Branch: 9205
Name: OLD GEORGIANS - JHB

For the record, I appeared on telly to uphold the longstanding tradition of not turning down a rudely acceptable wager. Needless to say I won - in more ways than one. I doing what all OGs hopefully should be doing best sucking the marrow out of life and making every experience as profitable as possible...

sincerest regards

Shifting up a few gears to something more important, however, its great to see the Almer Mater is so strong in UK (thanks to the selfless efforts of Tom Quinton OG '65 - see below for details). For those on the list, see you at the annual OGs dinner at the RAF Club Picadilly London on 25 April, two days after St George's Day...

Well done for the website. Have met many OGs down in South of England over the last few years. Any others coming to UK please see note from Tom Quinton, a few entries below - next OG dinner about April 2003. Tom does excellent unpaid (but much appreciated) work in building and maintaining the UK OG network. Anyone know where Charles Dean, Sean Walsh Graham McAlister and Ben Mhlangu ('73) and others are?

Hi there Class of 1992 ! It's been a long time since I heard from anyone from Saints. I've been hearing a lot of sad news about Zimbabwe off late and am hoping that all the folks there are fine. I happenend to visit some site (while I was looking for the Saints homepage) and was very upset when I read someone's allegations of racism at St. George's College. I wish my school and the wonderful teachers there all the very best in these testing times. I also would take this opportunity to expresss my gratitude and thanks to my favourite teachers from my years at Saints. Thank you Father Ross for teaching me Mathematics, Mr Stokes for Physics and Mrs Craigie for Chemistry. You weren't just good in your subjects, but you are excellent human beings who have given me and all those who study at saints so much to treasure in their lives. Thank you and good luck. It's been ten years since I left Zimbabwe to head back home to India, but still have fond memories of my dear friends there. A quick hello to Ian Greager, Dimiter Gochev, Jonathon Smith, Gillon Benoy, Bonarjee, Arcaro, Kuda Saburi, Gareth Ziyambi, Robert Evans, Robbie Parker, Kevin Murrel, Timothy Murphy ....the list is long !!

Here we go now, got my password and back on this site. Surely there have got to be more pictures from Saints that can be put up and what about updates on staff(moves and changes)? What about changes or planned changes to the grounds, buildings, facilities...just thinking that if anyone knew anything..it would be good to share the info so that those of us that haven't been back can know. All you boys out there that know me, email sometime. I am in the NY area so if you are in this neck of the concrete jungle, drop me a note.

I will remain an anonymous coward, since can no longer remember my user name or password, and you insist on e-mailing me a reminder (I no longer use that address having changed jobs).

My new e-mail address is james.maxwell@cwb.com I now live in the UK. Regards to all who remember me...

Actually, the class of '95 had a website about two years ago or so - but I didn't have much material to put on it, and so it died a slow death :( So now I just spend my time playing with this one ...

Hopefully this whole database is now up and
running correctly. If anyone notices any huge
errors, I would appreciate it if they would let
me know on admin@saints.on.web.za

Somrthing happened to my earlier msg. Ther are only a few Old Georgians out here and the only one I've met face-face was John "Blondie" Adamson 62 who was a water-bomber pilot for the Alberta Gov't. He hasn't changed a bit. Looking for info on Adrian Lind 59/60 Rob Cobbold 61 Percy Gass 60 and any other from that era. Some of the names on the scratch pad must be sons or grandsons! Wow am i getting that old.?

It appears that we don't have any backups of the comments file
(or at least none in a form that might vaugly be useful). Many
appologies to the regular readers of this forum - I will make
every effort to ensure that it doesn't happen again :(
